What is Yunnan Baiyao?

Yunnan Baiyao is a prized Chinese Herbal Medicine used to stop bleeding (both internally & externally). It can be used externally on open cuts, wounds and tumors; or, Yunnan Baiyao can be used internally for severe bruising, bleeding ulcers, blood or urine in stools, nosebleeds, tumors and post surgery.  Yunnan Baiyao is also used to reduce inflammation, provide pain relief, to tonify the blood (i.e. snake bites) and promote healing.

Yunnan Baiyao is commonly used to extend the life of dogs (and cats) with bleeding cancers such as hemangiosarcoma or nasal cancer (nosebleeds). Some treatments for cancer, such as Chemotherapy, tend to promote bleeding; it makes sense that giving a supplement to promote blood clotting would be a benefit. It is believed that Yunnan Baiyao works by activating the platelets, which are the small blood components that help make the blood clot. Blood clots are the first step in a scab. They are like little plugs or corkes in the way they stop hemorrhage.

Dosage Instructions for Yunnan Baiyao:

Every dog and every case is unique. Ultimately, you want to find the lowest dosage needed to control bleeding; for some dogs this will be 1 capsule every other day, for others it may be 4 capsules 4x a day.

Please consult with a veterinarian; but, these are general guidelines:
  • For dogs under 10 lbs, give 25mg by mouth one time a day.
  • For dogs from 10 to 30 lbs, give 25mg by mouth two times a day.
  • For dogs above 30 but less than 60 lbs, give 50mg two times a day.
  • For dogs above 60 lbs, give 50mg three times a day.

**Do not give Yunnan Baiyao on an ongoing basis. It is best to give it on alternating days, or for a 5-day on, 5-day off cycle that repeats. There is some possible evidence that this medicine may elevate liver markers if given daily for prolonged periods of time.

Side Effects of Yunnan Baiyao:

If the dosage is too high, your dog may experience symptoms similar to dehydration: diarrhea, frequent urination, increased thirst, dry or cracked nose and paws. In very rare instances, there may be an allergic reaction; in which case, please discontinue use.

Aiming to prevent cancer from bleeding.

Yunnan Baiyao can stop some cancers from bleeding. As a veterinarian, I have seen dogs with nasal tumors sneezing blood profusely. I have also seen the bleeding stop when the dogs were started on Yunnan Baiyao.
The powder is easily administered by mixing it into a meal. Although it has a floral type scent, this has caused no hesitation in my pet eating his meal.

Still kick’n

Ziggy is still living life to the fullest! Diagnosed with a Hemangiocarcinoma back in January and was given 6 months to live. Now we are at 9 months! We are shooting for a year. Most days are good. We started sprinkling the powder on his food because sometimes he would eat around the pill. He doesn’t even act sick. Very thankful for each day I have with zig.

Giving our dog a new lease on life

Our 12 year old, 90 pound mixed breed was diagnosed with splenic hemangiosarcoma on July 13, 2022, and our vet said he'd likely pass within 1-6 weeks. We started giving him Yunnan Baiyao powder as soon as we received it, roughly July 18th, starting with 50 mg 3x a day. He's had immediate improvement in energy, less winded, general spunk/zest, running up hills, walking long distances, handling flights of stairs that previously wore him out. After three weeks, we've reduced the dose amount to about 25 mg 2x a day, and it seems to be sustaining him. We're so happy that he's made it this far and is enjoying his days.Fingers crossed for 6 more weeks.

Life Saver!

Our dog was diagnosed with an inoperable tumor on his spleen in April 2021. I started using Yunnan Baiyao almost immediately. He has only had one incident since then when he presented with his original symptoms that led to the diagnosis, I gave him one of the "red" pills and he recovered by the next day. He is still a happy boy, doing well and I am thankful for this time with him.
